SAIDA UMURERWA fled with her family that lived in a Rwanda village during the devastating 1994 genocide. They walked for days until finally, they made it to the border of Tanzania. For 17 long years, they lived in UN refugee camps first in Tanzania, then Burundi.
“The experiences I had in the camps taught me the importance of connecting and working with new communities. In the camps, I learn to speak new languages, to make necklaces and bracelets from seed beads, pearls, and glass beads.
