    The designer

TWICH (Twich Women’s Sewing Collective) Abuk BOL, the founder of TWICH, came to Melbourne in 2009 as a refugee. In Australia over the ensuing five years, Abuk forged a life for herself and her enormous brood of seven kids. Her story is courageous and inspirational.

She learned to sew as a child in South Sudan and worked as a seamstress there. When she arrived in Melbourne she discovered The Social Studio, who supported her to do her Certificate 4 in Clothing Production and this allowed her career to take flight.

With a group of women from the Sudanese community, Abuk set up a new enterprise, Twitch Women’s Sewing Collective.  In their studio, the women make clothes, crafts, and do alterations. In addition to this hands-on creating, the collective provides accredited training in sewing skills to newly arrived. Familiar with the isolation common to the experience of refugees trying to find their feet in an unfamiliar country, Abuk has fostered a safe, warm and welcoming environment for women from many different backgrounds.
